Transcranial Electrical Stimulation (TES) Therapy

Are you suitable for TES Therapy?
Simply contact us to find out.

EliteVita offers TES therapy, a non-invasive brain stimulation treatment to improve brain function and help with anxiety, depression, sleep disturbances, and more.

What is TES Therapy?

TES stands for Transcranial Electrical Stimulation and is a non-invasive, completely painless non-pharmaceutical stimulation of the brain through the use of very low current electrodes placed upon the head.

The electrodes pass a very low voltage current to each other through the patient’s head which can alter neuronal excitability and stimulate the human brain to release endorphins and serotonin. (See how it works HERE.)

Studies on TES repeatedly show a significant benefit in patients with a wide range of conditions from anxiety, depression and dementia to Parkinson’s, IBS, weight loss and diabetes!

How is TES different to other brain-stimulating therapies?

The use of electrical brain stimulation is not a new phenomenon. Using an electrical current to treat ailments started flourishing in the 18th century, but the romans even used electric eels to alleviate headaches!

If you google “Transcranial Electrical Stimulation”, you might get a number of similar looking results. This can be quite confusing but many of these will be types of TES.

The Journal of Inherited Metabolic Disease (2018) states that “TES comprises a number of different techniques, including transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), alternating current stimulation (tACS) and random noise stimulation (tRNS).”

Compared to other techniques for non-invasive brain stimulation, such as transcranial magnetic stimulation on the prefrontal cortex, TES has various advantages, including little to no side effects.

It is also typically more affordable and can target localised areas of the brain, unlike transcranial magnetic stimulation.

Although the TES therapy we offer here at EliteVita is relatively new to Dubai, it is widely used in hospitals throughout Russia, Eastern Europe, and Western Asia with reportedly exceptional results.

So, if you do find it challenging to source additional information about TES therapy, just give us a call and we will be happy to help.

Transcranial Electrical Stimulation therapy

What conditions can it help with?

The principle of Transcranial Electrical Stimulation therapy is to reset our brain to a healthier default. As our brain controls the master switch for all our body’s functions, it’s no surprise that if poorly functioning pathways within the brain begin to realign and repair, so will our physical issues.

That being said, the physiological effects of the treatment vary depending on a number of factors, including the specific treatment, if cognitive training is included in the treatment, stimulation intensity, the frequency of stimulation, and which brain regions are activated.

TES-induced effects

TES-induced effects on neural activity are centred around helping the body return to a state of homeostasis. TES effects can include improved mood and sleep patterns with less anxiety reported in patients. This is why a transcranial electric treatment for mental health improvement or insomnia is sometimes recommended. Numerous studies have shown how promising cranial electrical stimulation for anxiety and depression can be.

Whilst it might seem quite farfetched that a simple therapy such as transcranial electrotherapy can have such a wide range of positive impacts, there have been a number of TES experiments and studies (click here for a list) returning physiological and modelling evidence that support the use of TES therapy for the following health issues.

Please note that this list is not exhaustive. Conditions and symptoms that have been associated with cranial electrical stimulation include:

How does transcranial electrical stimulation (TES) work?

Transcranial electrostimulation therapy is a form of neuromodulation that involves sending an electrical current to the cerebral cortex to alter cognitive processes. The current is conducted through the skull into brain circuits using two or more electrodes where it has the capacity to modulate brain activity and alter neuronal excitability.

TES therapy “selectively activates the defence mechanisms of the brain, thus increasing the ability of neural cells to produce endorphins and serotonin,” 2021 TES Center LTD.

Whilst none of us would say no to a shot of nature’s feel-good chemicals (serotonin & endorphins), TES therapy is not simply a way to mask pain; it’s far more than that.

The Homeostatic Effect

In studies, TES is reported to have a “homeostatic” effect, meaning that it brings the entire body back into balance. This idea of “balance” might appear a little vague to us in the Western world as we are so accustomed to manmade drugs that act intentionally and artificially on single organs or disease pathologies. We are not used to the concept of therapies that support our body’s own systems to regain health as a whole organism, but maybe we should be.

Even though its benefits have the potential to be far reaching, TES is not necessarily a cure-all remedy for everyone. However, it is worth finding out if TES will be especially helpful for you or if it is simply the one thing that you need to add to your health regime to nudge you over that threshold from battling with stress and fatigue into mental clarity, calm, and good health.

What are the different transcranial electrical stimulation (TES) techniques?

There are four primary techniques for low intensity TES that have been thoroughly examined and investigated for their effectiveness: transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS), transcranial pulsed current stimulation (tPCS), and transcranial random noise stimulation (tRNS). We’ll cover one of the most common stimulation techniques, tDCS, below.

High definition transcranial direct current stimulation is one of the more commonly used techniques. It involves the enhancement or inhibition of neuronal activity, affecting motor cortex excitability. A constant direct current is applied to the human scalp over the motor cortex using cathodal and anodal electrodes. Cathodal stimulation decreases and anodal stimulation increases cortical excitability.

Is the TES treatment safe?

The use of electrical brain stimulation in today’s society has become associated in many people’s minds with the negative portrayal of electroshock therapy in films, but this could not be further from the truth. TES uses a very low level current across just 2 electrodes, creating only a mild sensation for the user. It’s non-invasive and administered under expert supervision.

At Nadcell Clinic, our team of experts adhere to strict stimulation protocols outlining the safest methods of administering this treatment. Our stimulation parameters cover the most optimal electrode placement, stimulation period, stimulation frequency, and more.

Everything we do in life carries an amount of risk. That being said, of the many clinical trials and case studies conducted for TES therapy, there have been, to our knowledge, no recorded side effects.

By way of further reassurance, no TES session is conducted without a full assessment by one of our experienced senior clinicians, so you can relax in the knowledge that you are in very safe hands.

How many sessions will I need?

This will be based on your individual needs and the other therapies you undertake alongside your TES sessions.

Although TES has proven to be highly beneficial in isolation, when it is used in conjunction with other therapies, medicines & behaviours such as the Satori chair experience, talking therapies, healthy eating, and NAD+ IV therapy, for example, the sum becomes greater than its parts.

If your body has been struggling with ill health, either mental and/or physical, a handful of TES sessions will undoubtedly make you feel better, but that positive effect may start to erode as you return to the daily stresses and strains of daily life. The impact will effectively get drowned out.

But if you start to create some space for yourself on a regular basis to design the very best internal environment for your mind and body to truly rest and repair, you’re enabling it to build resilience, to dilute your current ill health or feeling of burnout with health and vitality, and re-build yourself into the absolute best version of you.

The fact remains, however, that we are all different. Even the same illnesses can react differently to treatment depending on the person who is experiencing it, so whilst we recommend a minimum of 5 TES sessions, preferably paired with Satori vibroacoustic therapy, you will be fully assessed by one of our senior clinicians to ensure that we provide the very best range of treatments for your individual needs.
